Is it really as hard as i hear to meet quality women in NYC unless you're really rich?

Just curious as i'm moving to NYC to go to grad school at NYU in 2 months. I make $58,000/year which i know is crap by New York standards, i'm above average looking from what i've been told but everywhere i read all the younger, pretty girls only date wall street types. is that true? anyone who lives in the city care to comment on the dating scene?
